MOTORBIKE System

The Motorbike CREUAT System has been developed within the Electric Scooter Development joint project with specialized companies taking care of specific areas of design. These companies are:

  • Applus Idiada: coordination and chassis design

  • Mavilor, S. A.: electric engine

  • Guilera, S. A.: electronic components

  • J.Juan, S. A.: brakes

  • Shad: seat

The aim of the procjet is to jointly organize a partner structure for a complete motorcycle development service, and has been backed by Feder (European department) and Acció 10 (Catalan Goverment)

The motorbike shows the application of our interconnected suspension to a 2-wheel vehicle

Our specific aim is to evaluate the advantages that we can bring by controlling the vehicle body movements, and separate the vertical and pitch spring and damping rates. The motorbike dynamics are highly influenced by the driver, and show a quite different inertia for the pitch and vertical movements that demand different suspension settings for each. Only an interconnected suspension system can provide an optimal solution to this problem.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The Motorbike CREUAT System system is a passive interconnected suspension system designed to separate the spring and damper rates for each body movement such as PITCH and VERTICAL

Conventional systems can define separate spring and damper rates for the front and rear wheels, but cannot set specific parameters for the combined movements such as the Motorbike CREUAT System

The advantages of the modal-configurable suspension is achieved without the cost and complexity of active systems. It contains no sensors and no actuators, and the response to wheel movements is instantaneous. The system only needs simple acting cylinders that replace existing coilovers and a central device connected through flexible hoses.

The design is simple and efective, provides the right damping rates adjusted for the specific inertias to the pitch and vertical movements. The optimization can go beyond the existing suspension systems

The Motorbike body shows very different inertias for the vertical and the pitch movements. This particularity leaves most suspensions be either over or underdamped for one of the body movements. Besides that, the spring rates of conventional syustems are not separated and cannot adjust the response frequencies properly.

Some configurations, like the telelever can change the suspension behavior but do not have enough control over the spring/damper ratio on each movement, and are often criticised by the motorbike driver, often focused on the driving feelings.

Another usual resort are assymetric damping rates. This in combination with the inverted front/back geometries provide a widely used solution.

The Motorbike CREUAT System, on top of the existence of the front girder fork or even add assymetric damping. But the advantage to separate pitch/vertical spring and damping rates is unique.

COMPONENTS

The Motorbike CREUAT System elements are integrated in the front fork and replace the rear coilovers. The present design uses twin cylinders due to the chassis configuration. More optimized weight/performance can be implemented with single cylinders when the chassis design allows.

The central device contains the spring and damping elements, and the ports for the system initialization.

  EASY INSTALLATION

The components replace the former ones, and the connections to the central device are made with relatively thin 1/8 flexible hoses

The central device can be placed anywhere in the chassis, and the hoses are flexible enough to make a neat installation.
